Arab Ensembles

Kaman (Arab Violin) Ensemble

It is a weekly 60-minute group performing class. This group is based on teachers’ discretion. Students work together with their friends who play under the supervision of their instruments teachers. The group joins the Department’s takht ensemble during the Academy’s occasions and events.
Audience: Classes are organised according to playing ability

Arab Percussion Ensemble

Classes are set for different levels, beginners and advanced, where students work on Arab rhythmic set such as wihda kabira, masmudi, chiftetelli and more. The instruments used during the sessions are: tabla, tar, riq and mazher.

Type of Activity: Ensemble playing of Arab percussion music. The ensemble is set for different levels, beginners and advanced. The students work on Arab rhythmic set such as wiha kabira, masmudi kabir, shaftatalli and much more. The instruments used during the session are; tabla, tar, daff and riq.

Duration: 60 minutes

Takht Ensemble

This ensemble is formed to develop the level of students playing ‘ud, qanun, nay and Arab percussion. Students are selected to join the group based on their teachers’ recommendations. In the takht ensemble, student explore traditional Arab music and its compositional and improvisational techniques. They work together with their friends who play music on different instruments.
Audience: Advanced students studying ‘ud, qanun, nay, kaman or Arab percussion.
Type of Activity: In the Takht they will explore the traditional maqam music and its compositional and improvisational techniques. Students work together with their friends who play different instruments.
Prerequisites: Interested students must play an instrument and be able to read music. Auditions required.
Duration: 60 minutes
